Weekend Beer Update

It’s a weekend with a few breweries turning the corner and saying hello to another year, while sadly Fermaentra won’t make it to their next anniversary and is having a closing party this weekend. Stop in and say goodbye, or better yet show your support for your neighborhood craft brewery and down a few there!

All Week through Sunday 24: Join Halfpenny Brewing Company to celebrate their third anniversary. They’ll have food trucks and fresh beer releases each day of the week culminating with live music all weekend plus brewery tours and prizes.20170315_185333_HDR

Friday 22 – Sunday 24: It’s a weekend-long party at Goldspot Brewing Company for their fourth anniversary. Enjoy tropical-themed beers, food trucks, and special merch.

Friday 22: Check out the Second Annual Stout Wars at Jagged Mountain Craft Brewery. The staff competes to make the best stout, and the first keg to kick wins.  Buy a ticket for tasters, a pint of your favorite, and a commemorative glass to keep. Tapping starts at 6 p.m.

Saturday 23: Sadly, the hyper-competitive Denver20170211_211127 beer market claims another victim. Fermaentra Brewing near DU will have their final party Feb 23, where they will tap their barrel-aged brews for the last time.

Saturday 23: So it’s not actually beer event but the Winter Tequila Tasting Festival sounds like a heck of a lot of fun if  you want to take a break from beer. There are two sessions – early and late afternoon – at Blake Street Tavern downtown. Note: This is a ticketed event.

Sunday 24: It’s Girl Scout Cookie season again and that means local breweries tap into the theme, with cookie-inspired beers and pairings. Copper Kettle Brewing Co. will do their part by brewing up some special beers for their Girl Scout Cookie Pairing today, featuring four cookie/beer pairings.

Weekend Beer Update

Saturday 3: The longest-tenured brewery to hold an anniversary this weekend is Upslope Brewing Company in Boulder, which makes it a nice round ten. The party will spill out into the back parking lot with over 40 beers on tap, live music, food, games and even a cheese and beer-pairing Happy Hour (ticket event).

FictionSaturday 3: Fiction Beer Company will help ease the transition from Daylight Saving Time with Descent Into Darkness, which taps nine dark beers for you to cozy up with on the long, dark nights.

Saturday 3: Estes Park gets into the time change in its own way with the Fall Back Beer Fest, offering up samples of over 100 beers, spirits and non-alcoholic beverages along with music, food trucks and vendors. Chat with brewers, learn about homebrewing or even walk away with one of the prizes being offered. Note: This is a ticketed event.

Sunday 4: Regardless of what goes on in the stadium, you can still find happiness before next Sunday’s game on the Broncos Beer Bus which starts at WestFax Brewing Company at 11 a.m. and then stops at Joyride Brewing Company,20180621_172209_HDR Oasis Brewery and Zuni Street Brewing Co. before reaching Mile High and looping back to the start. The free bus runs hourly starting three hours before the game so you can even make a couple of loops if you think the game will be particularly painful.

Sunday 4: As usual, the first weekend of the month brings a number of cultural events and Alpine Dog Brewery will host Sunday Night Culture Club with beverages and the photography of Zachary Wilson.

Brewery Snapshot: Jagged Mountain Brewery

At the corner of Lawrence Street and 20th Street, Jagged Mountain Brewery occupies an enviable spot as one of the only breweries in the downtown business district. As you would expect, that keeps the place busy with a diverse mix of customers. However Jagged Mountain doesn’t just count on their location to drive business; they brew up a very broad and adventurous taplist that justifies a visit no matter the neighborhood.

BEER LINEUP: Jagged Mountain offers a large and diverse 20180919_164149_hdr.jpgmenu consisting of a few traditional styles augmented by a lot of beers tweaked with fruits or other additions plus a small high-gravity selection. Overall there’s enough diversity that almost any beer-drinker should find something enjoyable.

ATMOSPHERE: On a mid-week, pre-GABF evening the mixed downtown crowd created a lively and energetic atmosphere. It seemed like a lot of folks were dropping in for one or two after work or between other activities and there was a lot of turnover in the clientele of young hipsters, professional office workers, older tourists, and even the occasional family. The tasting room offers up the standard taproom look with exposed brick, steel & wood, a view of the brewery, and a small patio.20180919_164156_HDR

SERVICE: The bar-only service was reasonably quick and efficient, although the busy servers were not overly chatty about their beers.

LOCATION: The prime spot on the corner of two busy downtown streets makes Jagged Mountain easy to find, and a great stop before or after a ballgame, work, or other downtown entertainment. The brewery offers offers easy access on foot, via public transit or by car, although the parking situation varies depending on what’s going on downtown.

20180919_171052_HDRSTANDOUT BEER: Playin’ Hooky Cherry Wheat. At first look, the amber-colored beer is darker than a typical wheat, likely due to the cherry addition. After a nice noseful of cherry, the first sip brings a little bit of the malt peeking through the medium-sweet cherry flavor.  Nobody would mistake this beer for anything complex but it makes for a refreshing light, fruity beer that drinks nicely in this unseasonably warm weather. I made sure to finish mine while it was cold, as I do suspect that when it warms the cherry could lead to medicinal notes as often happens with these beers.

Weekend Beer Update

As usual, Saturday brings the largest number of activities over the weekend with all sorts of fun beer events including a few anniversaries and beer and music festival.

Friday 6: It’s all out war at Jagged Mountain Brewery; an IPA war. Staff members have brewed up six different and creative IPAs and will battle it out to determine the winner.

bruz-mannekin.jpgSaturday 7: Happy second birthday to Bruz Beers! Te celebrate, they have scheduled a jam-packed day starting with a car show and brunch beginning at 7 a.m. The afternoon brings live music, a market, yard games, and multiple food trucks including one specially for the dogs (literally).

Saturday 7: Bruz’s older sibling, Baere Brewing Co., celebrates four years with a party featuring special beer releases and beer ice cream and slushies. With forecast high temperature in the high 90s those sound awfully refreshing.

Saturday 7: Up north, 12Degree Brewing in Louisville also celebrates an anniversary; five years in their case. Their party offers up merch giveaways in addition to the traditional special beer releases and live music.

Saturday 7: If choosing one brewery sounds like too much work,  hit up Mile High Tunes and Brews from 4-7 p.m. at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The event promises music, food, games, and of course lots and lots of beerStation 26 .5 k from over a dozen breweries. Note: This is a ticketed event.

Sunday 8: The monthly Bluegrass Brunch comes to Station 26 Brewing Co., with food starting at 11 a.m. and music at noon.
